Oral PYYPeptide YY (PYY) is a gastrointestinal hormone secreted post-prandially (after a meal) by the endocrine cells of the distal gastrointestinal tract in proportion to the caloric content of a meal. There is published clinical evidence that elevated PYY levels contribute to weight loss and decreased food intake. In addition, studies have shown that blood levels of PYY are drastically elevated in individuals who have undergone gastric bypass surgery, an effective treatment for morbid obesity. Due to the rising obese population and associated risks of obesity, the FDA has granted fast track drug development process for certain drugs of other companies that are aimed at treating obesity. Results from Emisphere's studies in rodents demonstrated that oral administration can achieve therapeutically relevant blood PYY levels. A second study of PYY in humans started in January 2008. Publication of the first trial data is expected later in 2008.
